Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a simple and minimally invasive treatment for varicose and spider veins. Sclerotherapy treatments are performed by injecting a special solution into the vein, which causes the abnormal vein to collapse and blocks the flow of blood. Within a few short weeks, the vein turns into scar tissue and disappears.

Why Sclerotherapy?

Two reasons, really. Sclerotherapy may be done for cosmetic reasons, as it effectively improves the appearance of unsightly veins. It can also be performed to reduce symptoms involved with varicose veins, such as leg aching, cramping, burning or swelling.

What to expect

Before your treatment, our surgeons will thoroughly evaluate your vein condition and medical history. Depending on your medical history, we may recommend specific instructions for preparation. The day of the treatment, you should wear comfortable and loose clothing and we strongly advise you to not shave your legs 24 hours before treatment.

The treatment itself usually takes about an hour or less and is performed as an outpationt procedure. During treatment, you will lie comfortably on your back with your legs elevated. From there, we simply inject a special solution directly into the problem veins. As explained before, this solution will cause the vein to close and eventually disappear.

After resting for a few moments, you will be able to get up and walk around. We may recommend that you wear compression stockings for a few weeks. For most, people can go back to normal activities the same day or the day after treatment.
